Transfers are always important in football. As clubs go on and as managers come and go, it’s always imperative to add players that either fit a manager’s style or improve the team as a whole.
This transfer window is not different in the English Premier League, as clubs have been making their moves in the transfer market, to strengthen their squad and get rid of deadwood. Over €2bn have been spent so far by the 20 teams in England’s top flight, and here are the top 5 spenders.
5. Aston Villa (€82.35m)
Having narrowly escaped relegation last season, Villa have made some investments to strengthen their squad with a gross spend of €82.35m over 4 players that include Bertrand Traore from Lyon and Emiliano Martinez from Arsenal.
4. Liverpool (€87.7m)
Last season’s champions are not taking it easy either in the market, splashing €87.7m on Diogo Jota from Wolves, Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich and Kostas Tsimikas from Olympiacos.
3. Leeds United (€88.2m)
Newly promoted Leeds United have impressed with their performances on the pitch, and are also doing well in the market so far. A total of 6 players have been bought by Marcelo Bielsa’s side with Rodrigo from Valencia being the most expensive for €30m.
2. Manchester City (€88.8m)
Manchester City have always being known for flexing their financial strength every transfer window, and this one is no different. Five players, including Nathan Ake from Bournemouth have joined Pep Guardiola’s side for a combined fee of €88.8m.
1. Chelsea (€237.2m)
E shock you??? The way Chelsea played last season showed that they needed a lot of reinforcements, especially after the transfer ban they had and they’ve gone all out this summer, splurging €237.2m on Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen, Hakim Ziyech from Ajax, Timo Werner from RB Leipzig, Edouard Mendy from Rennes and Ben Chilwell from Leicester City. By far the biggest spenders so far this transfer window.
Which of the new signings do you think will perform best this season and who do you think will flop?
